In Bridge Engineering, during the past forty years, the conception, the development and the worldwide appreciation of segmental construction for prestressed concrete structures represent one of the most interesting and important successes. Most early segmental bridges were built by apply of bonded prestressing technique but, in recent years, the use of prestressing by means of external or unbounded tendons was considerable. In particular, the main developments certainly came in France, under auspices of Virlogeux, and in United States, where, in 1979 Muller introduced external post-tensioning for the Key Bridges in Florida. Substantial economic and construction time saving have been indicated for this type of construction and a significant number of segmental prestressed concrete box girder bridges with external tendons has already been constructed. However, relatively little analytical investigation has been undertaken to evaluate their behaviour and, as it is often the case in construction sectors in which technological progress may precede technical studies, suitable conceptual tools that explained their behaviour have not been consolidated. National and international standards are yet in evolution, in particular, about ultimate behaviour under shear and shear-bending moment interaction. Performance of a reinforced concrete beam, subjected to shear force V together with bending moment M, is an important aspect to take into account in design. The paper generalises a previous model proposed for box and I-shaped reinforced concrete cross-section of structural elements and based on stress-field theory. The model here proposed provides a unified approach for reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete elements with bonded or unbounded tendons. The reliability of generalised model has been validated by comparing the numerical simulation to the test experimental results of seven externally prestressed T-beams, referred in literature.
