The settlement processes of the different demographic groups living in a territory can be studied by the means of a class of spatial analysis methods known as "quadrat analysis". The territory object of study is divided into equal sub-areas (quadrats), in order to build the quadrats frequency distribution for number of points and obtain from it indications about the nature of the process that generated it. Typically, such indications are based on the comparison between the observed distribution and the one generated by the Poisson process. In this paper we discuss the use of an index based on an alternative benchmark process, that takes into account the variations in the potential res idential capacity of each sub-area. An application to the settlement patterns generated by the different groups of foreign residents in the city of Catania is presented.

Abstract
The settlement processes of the different demographic groups living in a territory can be studied by the means of a class of spatial analysis methods known as "quadrat analysis". The territory object of study is divided into equal sub-areas (quadrats), in order to build the quadrats frequency distribution for number of points and obtain from it indications about the nature of the process that generated it. Typically, such indications are based on the comparison between the observed distribution and the one generated by the Poisson process. In this paper we discuss the use of an index based on an alternative benchmark process, that takes into account the variations in the potential res idential capacity of each sub-area. An application to the settlement patterns generated by the different groups of foreign residents in the city of Catania is presented.Pubblicazioni consigliate
