Revamping of a municipal solid waste incinerator for the treatment of sanitary wastes

In the regional framework of the waste management some changes will occur, the newer Sicilian Wastes Management Plan aims at the construction of four new incinerators for the disposal of unsorted waste. Since the incinerator of Messina does not have the energy recovery system, it is not expected in the plan and will be dismissed in 2010. For these reasons its conversion for the incineration of hospital and industrial wastes have been analysed including the energy recover system using a steam boiler and a generator of electricity. This paper describes a wide analysis about the existing plant, the combustion process and the gas emission treatment of the converted incinerator and the characteristics of the hospital and industrial wastes to incinerate. The results of the study and the proposed solutions for the combustion process, energy recovery system and gas emission treatment have been reported in this work.
