The introduction on the market of various categories of products has shown the seriousness of the problem of their lifecycle management, linked on the one hand to the heterogeneity of materials that compose them and on the other to the possible negative environmental effects caused by incorrect forms of disposal. The objective of the various initiatives introduced at a normative level has been to act on the problem both upstream, by fixing specific requirements aimed to incorporate in the design phase the environmental management of the entire product life cycle or the restriction of use of specific substances; and downstream, by correct management of disposal that would imply compulsory involvement of all those involved in the supply chain. The aim of this paper is to analyse the present situation of the management of waste electric and electronic equipment and to highlight the opportunity of improvement linked to the proposal of revision of WEEE Directive now under discussion at European level.
