Since the 1970s historians have gone a long way towards reclaiming military history from traditional military historians. Because most of the typical institutions of naval warfare, or naval organization, originated in the Middle Ages, it seems appropriate to look at how technological, political and environmental changes influenced the conduct of naval warfare in some key points of the Mediterranean basin. The production of ships in the Mediterranean world often occurred in impressively-scaled shipyards, where it was carried out the entire cycle of production, factories ante litteram. Galleys remained popular as warships for a long time, not only in the Mediterranean, and galleys were the main product of those factories. Abstract
In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, increasing demand for galleys in the Mediterranean led to the development of large industrial complexes around the arsenals.Pubblicazioni consigliate
