In recent years, the topic of mental imagery has been subject to a surge of renewed interest in cognitive science. Quite recently, embodied cognition approaches using humanoid robots have begun tackling the problem of understanding the tight relationship that exists between mental imagery and motor activities in particular because of the important contribution this research might have in domains in which improving those skills is crucial for obtaining better performance, such as in sports and rehabilitation as well as in robotics. One of the first challenges that has emerged in this new line of investigation, concerns the need to establish a shared definition, of what mental imagery is. This paper addresses this question, reviewing some of the ways in which the term has been used, specifying the use that the authors make of it, as well as what they are trying to do and why.
