– Schirmer tear test I (STT) were done on 15 cats before and during anesthesia with ketamine in combination with medetomidine. There are no previous studies that look at the effects of these drugs on sequential STT1 readings in cats, including effects on tear production after reversal of medetomidine. All cats had tear readings taken pre-anesthesia, 15 min post-anesthesia and 15 min after reversal of medetomidine with atipamezole. Results revealed that intramuscular anesthesia with medetomidine-ketamine in cat with no history of ophthalmic disease cause a significant decrease in tear production. Readings returned to near presedation values within 15 minutes postreversal. It is therefore recommended that all eyes be treated with a tear substitute from the time the anesthetic is given until at least 15 min after reversal.
