The study was aimed at exploring the associations between the displays of autonomy and relatedness in mother-adolescent interaction and the degree of individuality and intimacy characterizing the family system. Twenty mother-adolescent dyads participated at this study. Observational ratings of autonomy and relatedness in mother-adolescent interaction were obtained, along with adolescent reports of the quality of the relationship with mother and both mother and adolescent reports of family differentiation. Mothers reporting greater family enmeshment showed lesser autonomy behaviours, and more promoting connectedness behaviours. Adolescents reporting greater family cohesion showed lesser autonomy behaviours, more promoting connectedness behaviours, and lesser inhibiting connectedness behaviours.
