The thyroid function was evaluated in 20 healthy mares, two to six years old. The mares were divided in two groups, on the basis of their physiological state: Group A= no. 10 pregnant mares; Group B= 10 non-pregnant mares. For group A, blood samples were taken after the ovulation (this is the baseline sample) and then, every 7 days, for 12 consecutive weeks. Blood tests were performed on the Group B following the same schedule. One way RM-ANOVA showed significant effects of time (F=15,82; P<0,0009) on the changes of T3 only. In the first quarter of pregnancy, total and free iodothyronines showed higher levels in pregnant mares than control ones.
