The salt industry dates back to very ancient times in the westernmost cost of Sicily, between Trapani and Marsala. The Phoenicians built the first structure in the 5th century BC in Motya and the Muslim geographer Al-Idrīsī wrote about a large salt pan in Trapani. Since the Middle Age the salt industry has been the main economic activity of this strip of coast, giving shape to the landscape. Over time, this activity has presented both moments of high production and moments of decrement. The trends of the last twenty years testify to a constant and slow improvement, also due to the creation of two natural reserves and the increase of tourism. This is a positive example of protection of a coastal ecosystem, combined with a traditional economic activity and tourism.
