Open innovation (OI) is a paradigm for the management of R&D activities that promotes a more open exchange of ideas across organizational boundaries. Adopting the OI approach, ideas are exchanged, coming from inside or outside the organization, or even resulting from a combination of both sources, with external, sometimes loosely coupled entities through software platforms.. This paper aims at investigating the OI phenomenon focusing on the organizational aspects of firms’ OI approach adoption, through a systematic literature review, to formulate propositions to be targeted in future research activities.
