Abstract

In the neverending superimposition of perceptive experiences that takes place in the modern citylabyrinth, the processes of spatial orientation seem to be entrusted to a plurality of mental maps, produced by individuals or groups. The movement towards forms of urbanization and the metropolitan way of life involve the euthanasia of public spaces; with the expansion of private space, failing the dialectic relation with the public space, there follows a generalized qualitative impoverishment. The rebirth of public spaces can take place towards the research of meanings and values of the lived city. In conceiving the plan as communicative action we prize on a strong interdisciplinarity that involves mainly the cultural and human geography, the environmental psychology, the cultural anthropology, the environmental sociology and the environmental design. These subjects find a common research field in the Environment Behaviour Design Research (EBDR) through which it’s possible, not only to know the lived space (home areas, mental maps) but also to have concrete projectual directions that allow to built common spaces of the living.
