New light on P.Strasb. gr. 1406-1409: the first Witness of Secundus’ Sentences

P.Strasb. gr. 1406-1409 contiene frustoli papiracei assegnabili al II-III sec. d.C. I frammenti furono ascritti a epinici di Simonide dal primo editore, B. Snell. Le conclusioni di quest’ultimo furono contestate da altri studiosi: A. Körte pensava a frammenti dalle perdute Istmiche di Pindaro, E. Lobel si limitava a rigettare l’ascrizione a Simonide e B. Gentili propendeva per Bacchilide. In tempi più recente nessuno ha ripreso questi frammenti, meramente ristampati tra i fragmenta adespota da D.L. Page (PMG, fr. 921) e D.A. Campbell (Greek Lyric V, fr. 921). Una rinnovata ispezione dei papiri e una nuova lettura in alcuni punti chiave di P.Strasb. 1407, col. ii mi ha condotto a identificare nei frammenti parti di un anonimo testo sapienziale noto come “le sentenze del filosofo Secondo”, scritto non prima della fine del II sec. d.C. Questi papiri rappresentano quindi il testimone manoscritto più antico. Scopo di questo contributo è presentare (a) lo status quaestionis sui pezzi a partire dalla loro editio princeps; (b) le mie nuove letture nei punti chiave; (c) l’indentificazione del testo e sua dettagliata discussione. P.Strasb. gr. 1406-1409 contain scattered papyrus fragments, probably to be dated to the II-III cent. AD; they were assigned to Simonides’ epinicians by B. Snell in his editio princeps. Snell’s conclusions were subsequently challenged by other scholars: A. Körte suggested that these fragments might contain some lost Pindar’s Isthmians, E. Lobel rejected the Simonidean attribution and B. Gentili plumped for Bacchylides. In more recent times, no one has attempted to fathom these fragments, thus they have merely been reprinted among the fragmenta adespota by D.L. Page (PMG, fr. 921) and D.A. Campbell (Greek Lyric V, fr. 921). A fresh inspection of the fragments and new readings in some key-points of P.Strasb. 1407, col. ii allow me to identify the text behind these scattered pieces: they do not contain Simonides or lyric poetry, but an anonymous text of wisdom literature, known as “Secundus’ sentences” written not earlier than the end of the second century AD.; these fragments are therefore the oldest witness of this text. In my paper I want to present (a) a general survey of the previous scholarship on these papyri; (b) my new reading in the key-points; (c) the identification of the text which will be discussed in detail.
