Abstract

The typological and building evolution of the twentieth century, due to the growing diffusion of skeleton construction and to the requirements of post-war reconstruction, has caused frequent errors of conception and execution, which can be attributed to discontinuities and disparities in the behaviour of buildings at level of thermo-hygrometric and static/dynamic performance. Particularly in Italy, the strong tradition of load-bearing masonries influenced the adoption of the "new" structural typology and the technical coeval literature not always has been able to suggest solutions suitable for avoiding such problems; all of this has caused design shortcomings, that the bad execution by construction companies and workers, little aware of the novelties, has contribute to worsened. In this scenario, which we intend to deepen in disciplinary terms and through the technical manuals, to identify the issues in the field, it is insert the research started for Messina: a survey performed has revealed many of the buildings built in Messina since 1950s in areas outside the urban planning of the early twentieth century, the presence of building pathologies that denounces how the concepts of energy dispersion and seismic vulnerability have been underestimated. The study therefore aims to retrace the analysis of designing and building errors, manifested on correlated paths of thermo-hygrometric well-being and static/dynamic safety of constructions of the second-twentieth century, in order to identify, in the panorama of innovative solutions, the responses that conjugate a new concept of energy-structural recovery for a sample of emblematic buildings.
