Biomedical polyethylene (UHMWPE - Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene - GUR 1020) has been used in mobile joint prostheses since 1961, and is also considered the weakest part of the entire prosthetic system. In fact, it is subject to degradation for the macro radicals formed during the sterilizing irradiation, to the chemical degradation for the contact with biological fluids, to the stress of the dynamic loads (tribofatigue). To increase mechanical/wear resistance, UHMWPE has been mixed with lubricant fillers (paraffin oil and carbon nanofibers) and it has been characterized by mechanical (static tensile, wear), and physical (thermal, wet ability tests).

Abstract
Biomedical polyethylene (UHMWPE - Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene - GUR 1020) has been used in mobile joint prostheses since 1961, and is also considered the weakest part of the entire prosthetic system. In fact, it is subject to degradation for the macro radicals formed during the sterilizing irradiation, to the chemical degradation for the contact with biological fluids, to the stress of the dynamic loads (tribofatigue). To increase mechanical/wear resistance, UHMWPE has been mixed with lubricant fillers (paraffin oil and carbon nanofibers) and it has been characterized by mechanical (static tensile, wear), and physical (thermal, wet ability tests).Pubblicazioni consigliate
