The historical-critical analysis is, together with the relief and the mechanical characterization of the materials, one of the cognitive phases required by the 2018 Technical Standards for Buildings to evaluate the structural safety of existing buildings. The reconstruction of the history of a building, the result of in-depth archival research of the original projects and after-effects of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance and/or changes in volumes, finds difficulties and sometimes impediments in the dislocation of documentation at the archival bodies. The information gathered is fundamental for the preparation of the Building Dossier, the instrument that will identify the building, describe the state of affairs relative to the last operation performed and record the interventions to which it has been or will be submitted. The historical-critical analysis that will be developed must therefore constitute a "new chapter" useful for the designer for the assessment of structural, performance and functional aspects of the building. The themes on which to structure it were derived from the documentation found for some residential buildings in the post-earthquake of Messina 1908 and subject to repairs or reconstructions after World War II, elevations in the 50s/60s and restorations from the 80s. The outcome of this research also highlights the need to preserve and bring together archival sources, moving from analogical to digital research, thanks to the use of an information tool, the GIS (Geographic Information System), for an effective management of the "Case History".
