In the first part of this paper, I intend to show commonalities in migrants’ representations, pertaining the first and second level mentioned above, in the Italian and British press, while in the second and final part, I will focus on how Western narratives, purposely created and reinforced by mainstream media, have a bearing on migrants’ language rights. More precisely, I am going to do so from a translation approach showing the consequences of the lack of visibility of language(s) and translation practices, particularly in contexts of inequality and injustice, such as migration laws and asylum procedures.

Abstract

In the first part of this paper, I intend to show commonalities in migrants’ representations, pertaining the first and second level mentioned above, in the Italian and British press, while in the second and final part, I will focus on how Western narratives, purposely created and reinforced by mainstream media, have a bearing on migrants’ language rights. More precisely, I am going to do so from a translation approach showing the consequences of the lack of visibility of language(s) and translation practices, particularly in contexts of inequality and injustice, such as migration laws and asylum procedures.
