Abstract

Life of modern people depends on many factors, often interrelated: an accident on a road can produce adverse effects on traffic, affecting in turn air quality, the management of possible emergencies, the possibility of reaching places of training and/or work, health repercussions. An assembly line placed in a given country suffers if the feedstocks coming from another country have a drop or there are problems with the logistic. Quoting a well-known phrase, "the beating of a butterfly’s wings can cause a hurricane on the other side of the world": this is the scenario of the global village in which we live. The management of such complexity and the possible implications is a theme of actuality. In particular, by restricting the viewpoint, a smart mobility approach is a fundamental step towards livability of our cities and the needs of its residents. Nowadays, thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity, Cloud, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data and so on, some complex functions can be managed by algorithms, by helping the drivers to efficiently interact with the surrounding infrastructure, in order to achieve different benefits and a weighted balancing between all the possible instances. The Cyber Physical Systems (CPSs) are one of the most important tools to reach such goals. The basic idea is a strong integration between the physical environment and the cyber one, in order to manage complex and heterogeneous systems, by taking into account multiple variables and human behaviors. Although the smart mobility field is widely investigated, several new applications are emerging, while the technology supports the research of the best trade off among conflicting interests.
