Pascoli was a skilful experimenter in poetic forms. The longest-lived of his many experiments was that of the ancient structure of the Terpander’s citharoedic nomos (7th century BC), already recognized in a large number of Italian and Latin poems. This paper investigates the historical roots and characteristic features of Pascoli’s experimentation with this form by retracing the extensive debate around the ancient meter that arose in the last decades of the 19th century. From careful attention to the poet’s manuscripts, it emerges that Pascoli also participated privately in this debate and acknowledged the structure of the nomos in the poems of Catullus, Virgil and Horace. Awareness of Pascoli’s engagement with this debate constitutes the critical starting point for future research on the use of the Terpandrian structure in his poetry.

Abstract
Awareness of Pascoli’s engagement with this debate constitutes the critical starting point for future research on the use of the Terpandrian structure in his poetry.Pubblicazioni consigliate
