The “art of living together” between two dissimilar organisms to obtain mutual beneficial advantages is a well-known phenomenon in ecology. Starting from this concept, we have recently begun the research on new functional nanomaterials originated by the symbiotic combination of polycyclodextrins with noble metal nanoparticles for the preparation of antimicrobial therapeutics. Within these collaborative projects [1-3], the main design criteria used to synthetize cyclodextrinbased symbiotic nanomaterials, their physicochemical properties, intracellular trafficking and biological response have been investigated. Supramolecular approaches have been employed to incorporate drugs (i.e. Linezolid, Pentamidine) into the nanomaterials to exploit their antimicrobial properties and their relationships with living cells.
