The convents of the Mendicant Orders had a fundamental role in shaping the topographical layout of the medieval cities. In Siena, the convent of the Carmelites, located in Pian dei Martellini nearby the area of the oldest urban settlement, and the convent of the Servites, in the Southern area of the city, were both built in recently urbanised areas related to the 13th-century walls. The study of the two buildings and of their surrounding urban layout provided important information on the actions of civic authorities, religious orders and workforce.

Abstract
The convents of the Mendicant Orders had a fundamental role in shaping the topographical layout of the medieval cities. In Siena, the convent of the Carmelites, located in Pian dei Martellini nearby the area of the oldest urban settlement, and the convent of the Servites, in the Southern area of the city, were both built in recently urbanised areas related to the 13th-century walls. The study of the two buildings and of their surrounding urban layout provided important information on the actions of civic authorities, religious orders and workforce.File in questo prodotto:
