This Research Topic focuses on the ocular involvement in systemic diseases that frequently precedes the onset of general symptoms and may constitute the first sign of the disease. A rapid diagnosis may promote prompt treatment and a better clinical outcome in different cases. These systemic diseases might result in different grade orbitopathy with typical ocular signs and symptoms that frequently are the first signs of the disease. Diabetic retinopathy may lead to visual impairment but corneal neuropathy and keratopathy can also induce visual disturbance. Ocular involvement is present in rheumatology (uveitis), hematology (monoclonal gammopathies), and vascular diseases. Additionally, systemic therapies (hydrochlorothiazide, steroids, hydroxychloroquine) may induce ocular changes potentially affecting visual acuity and the visual field. The aim of this Research Topic is to highlight the necessity of the multidisciplinary approach for diagnosis and treatment. We believe that such knowledge may improve diagnostic procedures and highlight the need for close cooperation between different medical specialists. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide as wide as possible information on ocular changes in systemic diseases, the signs and symptoms that should be considered when the systemic disease is suspected. We aim to provide a piece of information on ocular changes in systemic diseases and what signs and symptoms should be assessed when general involvement is suspected.
