The Peloritani Mountains, with their extensions along the Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts, represent a complex and articulated territorial system, characterized by a long history of human occupation. The interaction between humans and the environment has modified the original configuration of the landscape, shaping its current structure. Furthermore, the socio-economic transformations of recent decades have led to a progressive depopulation of the area and a consequent degradation of the historical-artistic heritage and artifacts present. Numerous traces of intense productive activity remain, with evidence of ancient rural architecture and related settlements, such as the villages of the Masse. The various hypogeal environments are evidence of ancient cultural practices and adaptations to the environment, probably attributable to Basilian monasticism. The artifacts of the two World Wars, such as bunkers and coastal batteries, represent further elements of complexity, marking an important change in construction techniques and materials. This study aims to investigate these testimonies through a multidisciplinary analysis, which combines direct surveys, indirect surveys using drones and laser scanners, photo interpretation and the use of software for data management in a GIS environment. The objective is to reconstruct the history of human settlement in this area, documenting the relationships between the different sites and their relative development dynamics.
