In the context of the global economy, maritime freight transport plays a crucial role. Sicily, strategically located at the center of the Mediterranean, has the potential to intercept trade flows to and from Southeast Asia, Northern Europe, and the Americas. This study aims to provide a structured tool for evaluating Sicilian ports in comparison to national and international standards, considering multiple factors that often are in conflict. Specifically, criteria have been identified in four key areas: freight volume handled, infrastructure capabilities, international trade, and the methods of freight transportation. The importance of these criteria has been assessed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Finally, a ranking of the evaluated ports was performed using the VIKOR method. This study serves as a strategic support tool for the assessment and improvement of Sicilian ports, an essential element for enhancing the region’s logistical and commercial system.
