Municipal biowaste is the main component of global municipal solid waste and can lead to notable environmental impacts. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is increasingly employed for evaluating different waste management practices, but certain challenges may arise due to their diversification. Therefore, it is important to analyse the main methodological aspects related to LCAs of municipal biowaste management. To achieve this aim, this study examines a sample of 203 articles collected from Scopus. The results highlight a predominant use of mass-based functional units and different system boundaries, with a focus on the waste treatment phase. Results also show that a multitude of assessment methods is employed, mainly analysing climate change.
