The concept of greening transportation is gaining momentum within the shipping industry, highlighting the need to establish energy-efficient routes that can predict and maximise the cruising range of solar-powered vessels. Solar energy is particularly beneficial for frequently travelled routes, such as those commonly used in coastal and inland waterway transportation. This study utilises an electric catamaran to test a solar energy system designed to optimise route operations, aiming to maximise both energy efficiency and travel speed. The case study focuses on a solar-powered post boat that delivers mail and small parcels in the Aeolian Islands archipelago. During five trips, the highest speed achieved was 8.35 knots, with the boat covering a total distance of 64.32 nm over 14.04 hours. The solar panels and grid combined generated and transmitted approximately 9,465 kWh of energy daily, leading to annual savings of 1.056 M€ in environmental pollution costs by reducing emissions from the boat’s operation.
