The success of organic production, in recent years, is due to the growing interest shown by consumers for products that contain itself a guarantee for health, safety, environmental protection and that they meet the needs of organoleptic quality. The new EC Regulation 834/2007, which is come into force in January 2009, provides the basis for the sustainable development of organic production while ensuring the effective functioning of the internal market, guaranteeing fair competition, ensuring consumer confidence and protecting consumer interests. The Authors look into innovations in the new Regulation which highlights one of the most controversial such as the extension of the tolerance threshold of 0.9% of accidental contamination of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
