Abstract

This paper presents a review of empirical studies that individualize, for Italian economy, the motivations that stimulate firms to use forms of profit sharing. The main results are that, in the period previous to the Protocol (of July 23, 1993), profit sharing was used by few firms and mostly to increase productivity. In the period following to the Protocol, instead, firms have adopted the participation schemes for remunerating workers in alternative to yield increases in basic wage rates.
