A contribution of infiltrating mononuclear cells and of endothelial cells, as suggested by the immunohistochemistry results, cannot be excluded.In conclusion, this is the first study showing that the ischaemic heart can produce erythropoietin. Owing to the cardioprotective effects of erythropoietin, our results suggest the possibility of a local mechanism of erythropoietin mediated protection in the ischaemic heart.
