In Italy the large family is an unusual fertility choice, for which the comprehension of causal factors represents an intriguing issue. In this work we used data from the Bank of Italy Survey on Families Incomes – carried out in 2002 – in order to understand the effect of income and education on the risk to create a large family. According to our findings the net effect of education is negative, as expected. However, there are some exceptions: Northern men with a high school diploma have a higher probability to have a large family than men with a university degree; Southern women with an university degree have a higher risk to have a large family than less educated women. The same exceptions are observed for the youngest generations
