Gelatine-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a protein produced by neutrophils, but also released by many epithelial cell types including kidney tubular cells. Its synthesis and urinary excretion increase in many pathological conditions, such as ischemia, infections and toxicosis. During this study the urinary concentrations of NGAL in 33 patients, affected by persistent macroproteinuria associated with primitive membranous and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, were analyzed. NGAL was measured in urine using ELISA commercial available kit. A close link between uNGAL and severity of renal disease in these proteinuric patients has been disclosed but findings reported cannot clarify the pathophysiological significance of this relationship.

Abstract
Gelatine-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a protein produced by neutrophils, but also released by many epithelial cell types including kidney tubular cells. Its synthesis and urinary excretion increase in many pathological conditions, such as ischemia, infections and toxicosis. During this study the urinary concentrations of NGAL in 33 patients, affected by persistent macroproteinuria associated with primitive membranous and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, were analyzed. NGAL was measured in urine using ELISA commercial available kit. A close link between uNGAL and severity of renal disease in these proteinuric patients has been disclosed but findings reported cannot clarify the pathophysiological significance of this relationship.Pubblicazioni consigliate
