Anatomical andphysiologicalstudiesofcardiovascularcontrolarelackingintheray- finned fish,thebichirs.Thepresentimmunohistochemicalstudiesonthebichir (Polypterus bichirbichir) demonstratedtheoccurrenceofintracardiacneuronsand nerve fibersintheheart.Immunoreactivitytotyrosinehydroxylase(TH)and acetylcholinesterase (AchE)andvariousneuropeptides(substanceP,galanin, vasoactive intestinalpolypeptide(VIP)andpituitaryadenylatecyclase-activating peptide (PACAP)),includingneuronalnitricoxidesynthase(nNOS),wasfoundinthe nerve cellbodieslyingclosetothe Sinus venosus and thesino-atrialregion.Themain intracardiac localizationofthenervoustissueisanetworkofnervefibers, presumably correspondingtothepostganglionicoutflowgivingrisetonerve terminals andthenervecellbodies.Inaddition,theheartisinnervatedbyextrinsic monoamine-containing nervefiberssupplyingthe Conus arteriosus and Sinus venosus, andsubstancePandgalaninimmunopositivefibersprobablyoriginating from cranialandspinalganglia.Theadrenergicinnervationoftheheartofthebichir is similartothatoftheteleosts,butfurtherstudiesarerequiredonnervouscontrol of theheart.
