Abstract
To monitorthehealthofaquaticorganisms,biomarkershavebeenusedaseffectivetoolsinassessing environmentalrisk.Inthisstudywasexaminedtheteleost Coris julis, sampledintwomarinesitesin Messina(Italy)atdifferentpollutiondegree,Milazzo,characterizedbyastronganthropogenicimpact, and Marinello,thenaturalreserve. C. julis is aspeciesparticularlysuitabletobiomonitoringbecauseits feedinghabitsfavorbio-accumulationofxenobiotics. The followingbiomarkerswereusedtoestimatetheimpactofhighlypersistentpollutants:cellular localizationofcytochromeP4501A(CYP1A)andglutathione-S-transferase(GST)intheliver,their hepaticexpressionatthemRNAlevel,theenzymaticactivity(ERODandBPMO),themicronucleusand comet assaysintheblood,esterases(AChEinthebrainandBChEintheblood)activityandevaluationof PAH metabolitesinthebile.
