The shire of Modica, instituted after the Sicilian Vespers rebellion, has been, through centuries, a Regnum in Regno, with an efficient administrative structure and a strong economy, due to the wealth of resources that helped the rise of settlements since late antiquity. The territory was protected by a system of towers used as storages for goods waiting for the transport to the coast, where they were sent throughout the Mediterranean Sea. A professional work upon a vast fortified complex of the Iblean highland, from decades in a state of dereliction, has been an opportunity of experimentation for the potentiality of stratigraphic reading in architecture with the aim of ensuring the authenticity of the buildings.

Abstract: | The shire of Modica, instituted after the Sicilian Vespers rebellion, has been, through centuries, a Regnum in Regno, with an efficient administrative structure and a strong economy, due to the wealth of resources that helped the rise of settlements since late antiquity. |
