The constantly growing diffusion of English as a lingua franca (ELF) is a linguistic phenomenon with wide political, social and cultural implications. This book provides a groundbreaking analysis of the challenges that ELF poses to the translator’s profession and offers suggestions on how such changes should be taken into account in translation training. Bringing together current research on ELF, socio-cultural approaches to Translation Studies and translation pedagogy, the book focuses on the hybridity of ELF and on the multilayered role of the translator today. Stefania Taviano calls into question assumptions about ELF as a simplified and easy-to-translate code of communication by pointing to the interconnections between English as a local language and English as a global language. The book encourages translator trainers to make students aware of what translating in today’s globalized society means as well as making them reflect on the ethical issues involved in the act of translation.
