The rate of maleic anhydride [108-31-6] formation over a V-P oxide catalyst was strongly inhibited by increasing 1-butene [106-98-9] concn. in the feed, but the formation of CH3COCH:CH2, CH3CH:CHCHO, AcH, and COx was not affected. Inhibition was explained using a Langmuir-Hinshelwood model with the reaction of adsorbed O with butadiene [106-99-0] intermediate adsorbed on 2 adjacent sites as the rate-detg. step. The rates of byproduct formation were expressed as reactions of butene or butadiene adsorbed on a single site with adsorbed or gaseous O. The rate equations agreed satisfactorily with the exptl. data. [on SciFinder(R)]
