Seismic amplification of ground motion due to simple topographic irregularities is investigated through 2D finite element numerical. Both semicircular shaped canyon and step-like slope geometries subjected to vertically propagating SV waves are considered in the analyses. Linear elastic, linear visco-elastic and equivalent linear analyses were performed in order to estimate the topographic aggravation factors. The numerical results obtained in the linear elastic and linear visco-elastic analyses were compared with the predictions of available analytical solutions for the canyon geometry, and with literature results of numerical analyses for the slope scheme. The comparison showed a good agreement implying that the adopted numerical approach allows to satisfactorily modeling the topographic effects on the site response. The results of the equivalent linear approach were presented and discussed in the paper focusing the attention on the influence of soil non linear behavior on the topographic amplification factors.
