The recent uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa call into question the consolidated conceptual positions and theoretical frameworks in the field of democratization theory. Starting from an analysis of the authoritarian regimes in the region, this article firstly tries to address the intertwining of political, economic, social and cultural aspects involved in the democratization processes, on the grounds of the main theoretical and empirical findings in comparative politics research; secondly it aims to draw a first, provisional assessment of the different paths of regime change in the countries of the region.
