In this paper the palaeobiogeography of Sicily in the Middle Pleistocene is exposed and critically discussed. In the Middle Pleistocene Sicily experienced two different geographic settings and two different faunal complexes of terrestrial vertebrates. The wide discussion, enriched by a new approach, enables to recognize the peculiar pattern of insularity followed by Sicily, froman oceanic-like to a continental island. Moreover, the role of the Strait of Messina in the faunal dispersal is re-considered and the action of Calabria in the spreading of terrestrial vertebrate is emphasized.

Abstract
In this paper the palaeobiogeography of Sicily in the Middle Pleistocene is exposed and critically discussed. In the Middle Pleistocene Sicily experienced two different geographic settings and two different faunal complexes of terrestrial vertebrates. The wide discussion, enriched by a new approach, enables to recognize the peculiar pattern of insularity followed by Sicily, froman oceanic-like to a continental island. Moreover, the role of the Strait of Messina in the faunal dispersal is re-considered and the action of Calabria in the spreading of terrestrial vertebrate is emphasized.File in questo prodotto:
