In the Mediterranean countries, maritime ex-voto are fairly common. Sometimes they were shaped into ships. They were offered to churches where they often hung down from the ceilings: one of these is kept in the Cathedral Museum of Messina. It is the last of four little silver ships offered by the Town as a collective thanksgiving to the virgin Mary. Similar ex-voto, signs of individual devotions, were in other Messina churches too. The ex-voto were either the signs of collective worship or the outcome of an individual negotiation. The votive offering seems to be a mainly “secular” way to manage the relationship with the sacred sphere.

Abstract
In the Mediterranean countries, maritime ex-voto are fairly common. Sometimes they were shaped into ships. They were offered to churches where they often hung down from the ceilings: one of these is kept in the Cathedral Museum of Messina. It is the last of four little silver ships offered by the Town as a collective thanksgiving to the virgin Mary. Similar ex-voto, signs of individual devotions, were in other Messina churches too. The ex-voto were either the signs of collective worship or the outcome of an individual negotiation. The votive offering seems to be a mainly “secular” way to manage the relationship with the sacred sphere.File in questo prodotto:
