The electroreduction reactions of cobalt(II) and manganese(II) complexes with the ligand bis(2′-quinolyl)-2,6-pyridine have been studied in acetonitrile by polarography and cyclic voltammetry, using tetraethylammonium perchlorate as supporting electrolyte. Both complexes gave a five-step reduction wave inthe range of potentials from 0 to −2.5 V vs. SCE. The first three steps were diffusion controlled and involved the transfer of one electron for each step. The last two steps involved the discharge of the ligand liberated from the complex ion. Low valence states of cobalt and manganese have been formed at the DME, in particular at the third step the species Co(DQP)2− and Mn(DQP)2− were obtained.
