Treatment of head trauma should focus on limiting the development of secondary injury by restoring of cerebral perfusion and oxygenation and reducing cerebral edema. Surgical therapy is indicated when there are depressed fractures, large hematomas or in patients with elevated intracranial pressure refractory to aggressive medical treatment. The prognosis depends on: severity of primary damage, location of injury and access to immediate management.
