The aim of this article is to analyse the convinction that the possession of language is the necessary condition to obtain a moral status. We shall offer some counterexamples to the Cartesian view according to which language is the conditio sine qua non in order to gain moral consideration, a position that characterised many of the contemporary approaches to ethics.
