The article traces out an updated profile of Pietro di Donato, the key-figure, with John Fante, of Italian American literature of the 20th Century. In his works, particularly the seminal “Christ in Concrete” (1939), the writer lays the ground of a new search for identity that gives unity to the Italian community in America, providing the framework of a revisionist and generative mixture between the spirituality and solidarity of the Italian popular traditions on the one side, and the aggressive (in economical terms), rising (in sociological perspective) core of the American Dream on the other. Di Donato’s ideologically and culturally subversive positions finally emerge as the high mark of an original analysis of the ethnic dynamics in the United States of the Twenties and Thirties.
