Thermalism in Sicily dates back to very ancient times. Since the 1970s the thermal industry began to be regulated by health and sanitation laws. Only starting from the end of the 1990s thermalism was redefined according to a new model which was based also on the principle of “wellness”. In Sicily this new situation has not determined the development of a thermal tourism so that the balnea have remained marginal tourist resources of the territory. This work presents the case studies of Alì Terme and Terme Vigliatore, in the province of Messina.

Abstract

Thermalism in Sicily dates back to very ancient times. Since the 1970s the thermal industry began to be regulated by health and sanitation laws. Only starting from the end of the 1990s thermalism was redefined according to a new model which was based also on the principle of “wellness”.
