This paper compares the translation of a specific lexical area in six Italian translations of Flaubert's Bouvard et Pécuchet. Specifically, the paper investigates a short passage of Chapter Two where there are several terms concerning fruit conservation. The paper also illustrates how the knowledge of the avant-text of the novel may help the translator's choices towards a faithful reconstruction of a literary text, the originality of which lies not only in the revolutionary narrative framework but in the author's linguistic choices. The three analytical perspectives adopted (genetic criticism, literary and specialised translation studies) are constantly interwoven in the analysis with the aim to offer possible solutions to the problems that rise from the translation of a work that can be considered as unique in its genre.
