Nanostructured two-dimensional titania films are an important component to develop advanced materials for energy and solar fuel applications. We discuss here two aspects. The first is related to the development of ordered arrays of vertically-aligned TiO2 nanotubes used as photoanode or a component for photoactive membranes in 1st and 2nd generation photoelectrocatalytic (artificial leaf-type) devices to produce solar fuels (H2 from water and alcohols from CO2). The second aspect regards the development (using sol-gel techniques) of functional, transparent titania coatings for photovoltaic (PV) cells, in order to improve self-cleaning and reflectivity properties of these cells.
