The increased ow of migrants (in Europe + 51%), the 2008-2011 economic downturn, the weakened system of tuberculosis control, put Italy in a social situation comparable to that of New York City during the tubercu- losis epidemic of years 1975-1993. The New York City Bureau of Tuberculosis Control strengthened its outreach unit so that many health work- ers went among vulnerable populations to test them, to nd the contacts of active TB cases, and to conduct Directly Observed Therapy for active cases and directly Observed Preventive Therapy for infected individuals. The Bureau also collaborated with community groups. New York City conquered the TB epidemic. Bearing in mind the New York City example, Italy can avoid the present risk of a new outbreak.
