The acousticemission(AE)isapowerfulandpotentialnondestructivetestingmethodfor structuralmonitoringincivilengineering.Here,weshowhowsystematicinvestigationof crack phenomenabasedonAEdatacanbesignificantly improvedbytheuseofadvanced signalprocessingtechniques.Suchdataareafundamentalsourceofinformationthatcan be usedasthebasisforevaluatingthestatusofthematerial,therebypavingthewayfora new frontierofinnovationmadebydata-enabledanalytics.Inthisarticle,weproposea frameworkbasedontheHilbert–Huang Transformfortheevaluationofmaterialdamages that (i)facilitatesthesystematicemploymentofbothestablishedandpromisinganalysis criteria, and(ii)providesunsupervisedtoolstoachieveanaccurateclassificationofthe fracture type,thediscriminationbetweenlongitudinal(P-) andtraversal(S-) waves relatedtoanAEevent.Theexperimentalvalidationshowspromisingresultsforareliable assessmentofthehealthstatusthroughthemonitoringofcivilinfrastructures.
