Genes form the basis of fear when we are confronted with a threat. Culture interprets what constitutes a threat. Psychology directs the particular rapid actions taken in response to the fear re ex. This re ex and action rest on fast thinking which, in situations of threat, dominates over slow thought that draws on education and rationality. This fear-based stigmatizing of immigrants may affect TB control. Reduction of stigmatization based on fear of contagion has proven dif cult, according to recent studies. However, fear of contagion may, in the short-term, help pry resources for clinical and epidemiological TB surveillance, prevention, and control out of funding sources.
